Overview of the Role

 

Location: Port Pirie, South Australia

Contract Type: Permanent

Reports To: Environmental Superintendent

 

Are you passionate about driving environmental sustainability in a complex and challenging industrial setting? At Nyrstar, we are seeking an experienced and motivated Environmental Engineer to join our dedicated SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) team in Port Pirie.

 

This key role will directly contribute to achieving compliance with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) License while supporting site-wide improvement programs, particularly the Environmental Improvement Plan and Water Improvement Plan.

 

With a focus on innovation and collaboration, you will help identify opportunities to improve environmental outcomes and work with internal teams to monitor and reduce emissions. Key Responsibilities

 

Environmental Compliance & Monitoring

 

  • Collect emissions monitoring data and prepare comprehensive reports for internal stakeholders and external regulators.
  • Maintain and regularly update the site emissions inventories to ensure accuracy and alignment with compliance requirements.
  • Identify and implement solutions to control site emissions and address environmental risks.

 

Strategic Improvement Programs

 

  • Lead initiatives to address metals emissions stemming from site activities, including investigations and root-cause analyses for emissions to air and water.
  • Coordinate technical studies aimed at better understanding and reducing site emissions impacts on surrounding environments and communities.
  • Drive the execution of Environmental and Water Improvement Plans, ensuring compliance and measurable progress in sustainability efforts.

 

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

 

  • Serve as a key liaison with internal teams, including Site Managers, Superintendents, and the Nyrstar Group CHESS team, to achieve organizational environmental goals.
  • Effectively engage and collaborate with the Environmental Protection Authority of South Australia and other external stakeholders.

 

About You

  • A degree in Environmental Engineering or equivalent qualifications.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience working within the heavy industry sector.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with a demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate at all levels.
  • Proven problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and provide actionable insights.
  • A proactive approach to driving innovation and fostering collaboration while ensuring compliance.
  • A passion for environmental sustainability and a results-driven mindset.
