Overview of the Role
We’re seeking a Gas System Compliance Specialist (Type B) to join our Engineering team based at our Port Pirie operations. This exciting opportunity is key to ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of our site’s gas systems.
In this role, you will be providing technical expertise in Type B gas systems, supporting day-to-day operations, maintenance, and compliance activities. Your focus will be on ensuring all equipment and associated gas systems meet regulatory requirements, Nyrstar standards, and engineering best practices. Additionally, you will lead breakdown responses, equipment modifications, and new installations while contributing to gas system risk management, performance improvements, and precise compliance reporting.
This role directly reports to the Engineering Superintendent and is located in Port Pirie, South Australia.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage, maintain, and audit Type B gas systems and appliances in accordance with AS/NZS 5601, AS 3814, WHS legislation, and Nyrstar standards.
- Provide technical expertise to support compliance and manage statutory inspections, certifications, and regulatory documentation.
- Perform tuning, compliance checks, and maintenance of gas burners, boilers, control systems, pipework, and related equipment.
- Collaborate with maintenance teams and contractors to deliver safe and compliant gas-related projects.
- Participate in risk management tools and processes
- Act as the site technical authority for Type B gas systems, providing advice to trades, contractors, and project teams.
- Create documentation, reports, and compliance records for all gas-related work and ensure engineering standards are adhered to.
- Support production reliability by reducing equipment failures and proposing solutions for recurring technical challenges.
About You
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
- Licensed or certified to work with Type B gas systems, including installation, maintenance, and servicing of gas appliances (AS 3814).
- Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrumentation Trade Qualification.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in maintenance or industrial gas systems, with strong problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to analyze technical issues, develop risk-based engineering solutions, and implement corrective actions.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and documentation skills for collaborating across teams.
Desirable:
- 5+ years’ experience in Type B gas systems within a heavy industrial, mining, or resources environment.
- Experience with SAP or similar ERP systems is highly regarded.
- Familiarity with WHS standards, statutory compliance, and gas-related regulatory frameworks.
