About the role

As the Nyrstar Hobart SHEQ Manager, you will be responsible for driving culture change initiatives to achieve a superior safety culture within the organisation. You will lead the SHEQ team in delivering effective occupational health, hygiene, safety, and environmental frameworks, ensuring compliance with statutory and company obligations. Your role will involve establishing department strategy, monitoring progress, managing safety and environmental incidents, implementing quality management systems, developing training programs, and providing leadership to the SHEQ department. Strong leadership, communication, and change management skills, along with experience in safety and environment practice, are essential for this role.

 

You will be responsible for:

  • Developing and maintaining a contemporary SHEQ strategy aligned with global and regional requirements, compliance obligations, and risk management programs.
  • Ensuring effective communication and understanding of safety, health, environmental, and quality policies and standards among employees and contractors.
  • Obtaining necessary licenses, approvals, and permits in a timely manner and ensuring ongoing compliance.
  • Establishing and maintaining systems for recording and reporting safety and environmental incidents, as well as conducting follow-up actions.
  • Undertaking occupational hygiene and environmental monitoring programs to meet standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Analysing and interpreting safety, health, and environment statistics to identify trends and develop appropriate responses.
  • Conducting investigations for incidents and events and developing corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Implementing and executing AS/NZS ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 (QMS, EMS, and SMS) standards.
  • Supporting internal SHEQ audits and coordinating external audits.
  • Developing and implementing safety management plans and conducting hazard assessments.
  • Managing the ongoing certification of the integrated management system and reporting on site quality objectives.
  • Effectively communicating and monitoring the progress of the SHEQ site strategy, while also establishing department strategies and annual plans that align with the organizational goals.
  • Cultivating a proactive culture focused on SHEQ through coaching, mentoring, induction, and training programs.
  • Ensuring compliance with Nyrstar's obligations and commitments to the local community and fostering a constructive and affiliative culture within the SHEQ department, management team, and during all interactions with employees, contractors, and customers.
  • Developing and maintaining systems and capabilities to record, monitor, and report on developing ESG and climate risk reporting obligations.
  • Understanding cost drivers for the SHEQ department and seeking structural and efficiency improvements.

 

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Significant leadership experience in all aspects of safety and environment practices including the maintenance of safety, quality, and environmental management systems.
  • A solid understanding of Safety and Environmental legislation and regulations and experience with their practical implementation
  • Proven experience in leading and supporting a positive safety culture.
  • Proven experience in managing complex legacy environmental impacts.
  • Influencing skills — ability to persuade a team or peers to move in a desired direction, build relationships, and negotiate effectively with a willingness to challenge the status quo.
  • Leading people — hold self and others accountable, appreciate others’ needs and perspectives and is committed to diverse perspectives.
  • Communicates clearly — designs and delivers clear communications to management, direct reports, and across the organisation.
  • Ability to achieve results in a demanding and challenging global environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to drive and implement change.
  • Experience with working with Environmental, Social and Governance and/or product stewardship frameworks will be highly regarded.
  • Experience in a mining/resources industry will be highly regarded.

Nyrstar Hobart is a large-scale zinc smelter located on Hobart's River Derwent, only a few kilometres from the Tasmanian capital's charming and cosmopolitan city centre. The facility uses the RLE process for zinc production. Hobart's key products are SHG zinc, die cast alloys and continuous galvanising grad (CGG) alloys. In addition, the site produces by-products of cadmium, copper sulphate, paragoethite, lead sulphate, leach concentrate and sulphuric acid.
