About The Role

Are you an experienced Senior Structural Engineer? Join our team at Nyrstar Hobart and play a crucial role in enhancing the structural integrity of our assets and ensuring the highest safety standards for new structures. Reporting directly to the Senior Project Lead, you will conduct assessments, analyse structural components, implement cost-effective solutions, provide technical guidance during construction, and ensure compliance with industry regulations. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our organisation's success and play a vital role in the safety and efficiency of our operations.

 

As a Senior Structural Project Engineer, you will:

  • Conduct detailed investigations into structural failures and analyse components and materials.
  • Provide technical expertise to Project, Production, and Maintenance teams.
  • Monitor operations for compliance with regulatory requirements and internal standards.
  • Develop remediation plans as part of our asset integrity program.
  • Manage and govern structural standards within the organization.
  • Evaluate and ensure the integrity of structures within our smelter.
  • Implement technical improvements and integrate new technologies.
  • Support drafting efforts and uphold high drawing standards.
  • Manage change through review and approval of structural engineering requests.
  • Provide technical advice during incident investigations and budget planning.
  • Review work of structural consultant engineers for alignment with standards.
  • Prepare reports for internal decision-making and regulatory compliance.
  • Build and maintain stakeholder relationships, delivering excellent business value.

 

About You

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Over 5 years of relevant experience, ideally within the mining, smelting, or a similar heavy industry.
  • A tertiary qualification in Structural Engineering (Bachelor level or above).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in communication and technical writing, enabling you to articulate complex engineering concepts clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Deep knowledge of the business and industry, including an understanding of organisational strategy, competitive strengths, industry dynamics, and the key drivers of profitability.
  • Strong leadership skills, characterised by accountability, an appreciation of diverse perspectives, and the capacity to understand and meet the needs of various project team members and stakeholders.
  • The capacity to drive and implement change, taking a proactive approach to continuous improvement and influence positive outcomes within the organisation.
  • The ability to perform under pressure in challenging site and global environments, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the face of obstacles.

Nyrstar Hobart is a large scale zinc smelter located on Hobart's River Derwent, only a few kilometres from the Tasmanian capital's charming and cosmopolitan city centre. The facility uses the RLE process for zinc production. Hobart's key products are SHG zinc, die cast alloys and continuous galvanising grad (CGG) alloys. In addition, the site produces by-products of cadmium, copper sulphate, paragoethite, lead sulphate, leach concentrate and sulphuric acid.
